How was The American College of Certified Wound Specialists
of Certified Wound Specialists formed?
The American Academy of Wound Management Board of Directors responded
to the call of nearly 2000 Diplomates, for the formation of
an advocacy and educational arm. The AAWM functions as a certifying
organization. The body of the AAWM had grown to the point that a
formation of a College for Certified Wound Specialists™ was
a natural progression in the development of its goal to promote
advanced wound care and set the standard of care in wound management
in the wound community. The College was incorporated in January
2005.
What can The American College of Certified Wound Specialists
do for me as a fellow of The College of Certified Wound Specialists
(FACCWS)?
The presence of The College of Wound Specialists gives validity
to the CWS™ designation. The primary focus of The College is
to empower and maintain the integrity of the CWS®. By increasing
the number of Fellows, we will enhance our ability to work for increased
provider relations, educate the public, and lobby Congress/CMS to
look at the CWS™
designation as a desirable credential to consider
for payment and in caring for wound patients. Additionally, The
College can bridge many of the wound care societies, organizations
and industry as an advocacy arm.
What happens to the American Academy of Wound Management
(AAWM) Diplomates who have a CWS™?
Your Diplomate/CWS™ certification status remains intact as
long as you pay your annual recertification fee. It is a requirement
to possess a CWS™ in good standing to join The American College
of Certified Wound Specialists and to use the designation
of Fellow of The American College of Certified Wound Specialists
(FACCWS). The AAWM will continue to implement and carry out its
mission to certify multidisciplinary wound specialists.
Who can join The American College of Certified Wound Specialists?
One must be a CWS™ in good standing with the AAWM to gain Fellow
status within The College. However, there are also correspondence
and industrial level members available for those who possess an
interest in wound care and promoting the goals of The College, but
do not possess a CWS™.
.
What else can The American College of Certified Wound Specialists
offer me?
It will work to develop avenues for the CWS™ candidate to obtain
review materials, resources and preparatory education for the CWS™ examination.
