How was The American College of Certified Wound Specialists of Certified Wound Specialists™ formed?

The American Academy of Wound Management Board of Directors responded to the call of nearly 2000 Diplomates, for the formation of an advocacy and educational arm. The AAWM functions as a certifying organization. The body of the AAWM had grown to the point that a formation of a College for Certified Wound Specialistswas a natural progression in the development of its goal to promote advanced wound care and set the standard of care in wound management in the wound community. The College was incorporated in January 2005.

What can The American College of Certified Wound Specialists do for me as a fellow of The College of Certified Wound Specialists™ (FACCWS)?

The presence of The College of Wound Specialists™ gives validity to the CWSdesignation. The primary focus of The College is to empower and maintain the integrity of the CWS®. By increasing the number of Fellows, we will enhance our ability to work for increased provider relations, educate the public, and lobby Congress/CMS to look at the CWS

designation as a desirable credential to consider for payment and in caring for wound patients. Additionally, The College can bridge many of the wound care societies, organizations and industry as an advocacy arm.

What happens to the American Academy of Wound Management (AAWM) Diplomates who have a CWS?

Your Diplomate/CWScertification status remains intact as long as you pay your annual recertification fee. It is a requirement to possess a CWSin good standing to join The American College of Certified Wound Specialists™ and to use the designation of Fellow of The American College of Certified Wound Specialists™ (FACCWS). The AAWM will continue to implement and carry out its mission to certify multidisciplinary wound specialists.

Who can join The American College of Certified Wound Specialists?

One must be a CWSin good standing with the AAWM to gain Fellow status within The College. However, there are also correspondence and industrial level members available for those who possess an interest in wound care and promoting the goals of The College, but do not possess a CWS.

What else can The American College of Certified Wound Specialists offer me?

It will work to develop avenues for the CWScandidate to obtain review materials, resources and preparatory education for the CWSexamination.
